As submissions keep rising and qualified reviewers become harder to find, every “agree to review” constitutes a choice about where our limited time goes. The Diamond Reviewer Pledge asks us to make that choice a little more deliberately: commit to reviewing at least one article a year for a diamond open access journal—one that charges nothing to publish and nothing to read, run by and for the scholarly community.

In a system under strain, directing even a fraction of our reviewing capacity toward these journals is a concrete way to give back and help sustain the community that produces the research in the first place.

Our goal with this pledge is simple: raise awareness about diamond open access publishing and support the journals that are already doing this work.

About the initiative

The Diamond Reviewer Pledge is a volunteer-run initiative by Steven Verheyen (Erasmus University Rotterdam) and Lukas Röseler (University of Münster).

They are members of FORRT (Framework for Open and Reproducible Research Training), an interdisciplinary community of researchers and educators who develop, share, and teach open scholarship, and who work to make science more rigorous, transparent, and just.

The organizers are editors of Replication Research, a diamond open access journal. They run the kind of journal this pledge asks you to review for, so they also stand to gain from it.

The data you provide through the pledge are held in a private spreadsheet accessible only to the organizers. As a signatory, you decide which information is displayed on the pledge website.
